5 Ways To Handle Uncertainty

March 28, 2019

These five tips will help you navigate uncertain outcomes or periods in life. Remember, you are the central creator of your life and by taking ownership of effort and outcomes, you remain the boss.

1. Don’t rely on outside forces to provide what you want or need

When you wait for others to give you want you want or need, you are not in control of your destiny or destination. You are handing over your power to make things happen.

For example, if you need support, money or a lift to somewhere, and are relying on another to deliver it to you, when they don’t provide you just end up feeling disappointed.

If you do what you can to support yourself, make your own money, organize a taxi or reliable(!) public transport to get you somewhere, you are more likely to be in control of the outcome. Take ownership.

2. Operate at your 100% best

If you put 100% effort into everything you do, you’ll achieve the best outcome possible. If you only put in 50% effort, guess what? The outcome will only be 50% of its potential.

This is another way of taking ownership of your experiences and thought patterns. An outside force may intercept and change your direction, but as long as you know that you personally have given your all, you have done all you can.

If things do not go as you want them to, despite your 100% effort, please do not give up. This is a classic point when people either give up trying or say ‘it wasn’t meant to be’, but keep your momentum. Effort equals results.

3. Maintain a positive mindset

Regardless of what may be going on in your environment (for UK readers, I won’t go into the ‘B’ word), it is essential to maintain your equilibrium with a positive mindset.

Entertaining negative thought patterns or unsubstantiated stories does not serve you and only perpetuates a bad mood.

It takes awareness and practice to steer your mind to a more positive side of experiences but it is possible. Please check out my Udemy course ‘How To Think & Live Positively’ which shares eighteen tried and tested techniques to create and maintain a positive attitude. 4. Let go of expectations

When you expect something to go a certain way and then it doesn’t, disappointment, anger or sadness reign.

If you book a tropical holiday and expect glorious sunshine, but it rains half the trip, you are disappointed. If you get on the plane, stating to yourself that come hell or high water, you’re going to enjoy every minute of your break, you are setting a positive intention to value your trip and it becomes time and money well spent.

If you take a new job and expect your boss to look after you and he/she doesn’t do this, you get frustrated. If you start the new job with an intention to do what is needed to succeed AND take care of your body and mind in your own way, you have ownership of the outcome.

There is a difference between expecting something to go the way you want it to and setting an intention. As per no.1 above, setting an expectation gives power to outside forces. Whereas by setting an intention, you are putting energy into creating an experience or outcome.

5. Drop the blame game

It is very easy to hang the blame on others. ‘This happened to me because he/she did that’ or ‘I can’t do X now because so and so did Y’.

Notice if you make statements like this, either in your self talk or out loud. They do not serve you and delay your developing a strategy to move onwards.

Acknowledge whatever happened and put your energy into what you yourself can do to turn things around.

What can you do now?
